EGR valve being repaired

What is an EGR Valve?

Climate change has been a major source of concern in the United Kingdom in recent years. To fight the high percentage of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere by road transport, regulations have become increasingly stringent. To meet the restrictive limits, car manufacturers had to modify the designs of their vehicles. The use of after-treatment devices is one method of lowering exhaust emissions. The majority of modern vehicles include an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. But what exactly is an EGR valve?

How does an EGR Valve Work?

EGR is a method used in modern internal combustion engines to control NOx emissions, which are produced as a byproduct of the combustion process. When air from the environment, primarily a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, combines with fuel and ignites within the combustion chamber, temperature increases and NOx emissions are produced.

The EGR system operates by returning a small quantity of exhaust gas to the engine’s combustion chambers via the intake manifold, reducing combustion temperatures and thus lowering NOx emissions. The main component of the EGR system is the EGR valve, which is normally closed. It links the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold and is governed by either a vacuum or an electric step motor built into the engine. The EGR valve’s purpose is to direct the flow of recirculated exhaust gas based on engine load.

Common Issues with an EGR Valve

The EGR valve on a vehicle is constantly in use, and because it is continuously burning exhaust gases, it has a high soot content. Soot can cause a buildup of carbon around the valve area, causing the valve to become stuck in various positions. To ensure that your engine performs to its full potential, keep the EGR valve closed. This creates a loop environment for your turbo system, allowing it to build pressure. An open-loop environment is created by a faulty valve, which results in feedback to the intake manifold. As a result, power and fuel economy issues arise.

A strong smell of fuel smelt from within the vehicle is also a sign of a failing EGR valve, as more hydrocarbons will be released into the atmosphere through the exhaust as fuel consumption increases. Because of its irritating nature, the odour is easily detectable and can actually be harmful to human health.

Concerned about Your Valve?

EGR removal is accomplished by programming the ECU to not open the EGR valve. We atr implying that nothing is removed from your vehicle. There are numerous advantages to removing the EGR from your vehicle, ranging from lower repair costs to lower fuel costs. Because an EGR is never used, any problems caused by it are avoided.
