EGR
Services

EGR fault diagnosis, valve cleaning and testing, and ECU software configuration for commercial vehicles, trucks, vans, and diesel cars. Manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment as standard.

What Is the EGR Valve?

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is designed to open and close electronically at specific points in the rev range, routing a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. This lowers combustion temperature and reduces NOx emissions.

These valves are subject to heavy carbon accumulation from exhaust gases over time. Carbon buildup on the valve seat, butterfly, or position sensor causes the valve to fail to open or close correctly — or in severe cases, to seize entirely.

A malfunctioning EGR can trigger warning lights, fault codes, reduced power, and in commercial vehicles, a full engine derate. Accurate diagnosis is essential to distinguish valve failure from sensor, wiring, or ECU software causes.

Common EGR Fault Symptoms

Smoke / excessive exhaust emissions
Rough running / misfires at low RPM
Loss of power / reduced torque
Limp mode / engine derate
EGR-related fault codes stored
Engine warning light
Poor fuel economy
Sticking throttle / unresponsive

Our Diagnostic Approach

1

Live Data Diagnosis

We connect manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment and capture live EGR data — position sensor readings, valve open/close cycles, EGR flow rates, and all stored fault codes.

2

Fault Isolation

EGR faults can originate from the valve itself, the position sensor, the differential pressure sensor, carbon accumulation, cooling circuit, or ECU wiring. We isolate the root cause before recommending any work.

3

Clean, Test or Replace

Where appropriate we clean and test the EGR valve and associated components. Where replacement is required we source the correct part for the vehicle.

4

ECU Software Configuration

Following mechanical work, ECU adaptations must be reset or reconfigured to match the new valve position data. We carry this out using the correct OEM software for the vehicle make.

Vehicle Coverage

We carry out EGR diagnostic and software work across the commercial vehicle range as well as diesel cars and vans. Coverage depends on the emissions system, available manufacturer diagnostic access and the vehicle's ECU type.

Diagnostic Equipment

Accurate EGR diagnosis requires the OEM tool for each manufacturer. Generic OBD readers cannot access manufacturer-specific live data parameters for EGR position, flow, and adaptation values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the EGR valve do?

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve routes a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold, reducing combustion temperature and lowering NOx emissions. It opens and closes electronically at specific points in the rev range.

What happens when an EGR valve fails?

A stuck-open EGR valve lets too much exhaust gas into the intake, causing rough running, smoke, and loss of power. A stuck-closed valve prevents recirculation, which can trigger emissions fault codes and warning lights. Either failure mode typically generates fault codes and may put the vehicle into limp mode.

Can you diagnose EGR faults without replacement?

Yes — many EGR fault codes are caused by carbon buildup on the valve, sensor failures, or wiring faults rather than a failed valve. A thorough diagnosis identifies the actual cause before any parts are ordered.

Is EGR work available via remote programming?

ECU software adaptations (resetting EGR adaptations after cleaning or replacement) can be carried out remotely on supported vehicle types. Contact us to check whether your vehicle qualifies.

Which vehicles do you cover?

We cover commercial trucks, diesel cars and diesel vans. Coverage depends on the ECU type, the emissions system and current diagnostic access for the specific vehicle.
