Is Speed Limiter Removal Illegal?

From July 2022, all new vehicles that are sold through Europe will be fitted with a mandatory speed limiter, to force drivers to adhere to the rules of the road and promote road safety. But, how does this affect speed limiter removal services? Through the electronic control unit (ECU), removing this device allows more speed and power for your vehicle; a benefit in certain circumstances. Yet, with the new regulations, does this change previous the modification process? For all the information on speed limiter removal, continue reading.

What is a Speed Limiter?

A speed limiter is a device fitted into a car that will ensure the driver will not exceed a certain speed. It is different from cruise control, as, with a speed limiter, you can still accelerate and decelerate. However, depending on the type, once you reach the set speed, the device will either refuse to let you accelerate further, or send audio and visual warnings until you return within the speed limits.

If fitted with an Intelligent Speed Limit System (ISA), the device can actually change the maximum speed depending on its surroundings; such as cameras and temporary speed limits. The device will automatically adjust and change accordingly.

Is Speed Limiter Removal Illegal?

It all depends. The type of vehicle, its weight and manufacturing date must be factored in before hiring an ECU remapping company. The European Commission have made all cars made after 6 July 2022 legally require a speed limiter; with new cars that have already been launched fitted with an ISA by 7 July 2024. But, this does not mean that speed limiter removal is not legal for older cars. Just for cars with the date of 06/07/22 or after.

The maximum weight also must be 3.5 tonnes, any heavier would be illegal. This is also true for vehicles that have had to have a speed limiter installed by law; which could include professional vehicles or those with speeding offences.

The Benefits of Removing a Speed Limiter

So, you have the right vehicle, great! But what are the benefits of removing a speed limiter? In some circumstances, speed limiter removal increases a vehicle's performance and overall driving experience. You will be able to reach your vehicle's full potential, without being hindered in any way. This is key for any cars that are taking part in any drag race events.

Hiring a speed limiter removal service means that you can save time and money on journeys. This could result in cost-effective solutions by speeding up travel times and letting you control your own vehicle. For trucks or tractors on the road, this will enhance the driving experience. Also make it easier to keep up on busier roads such as motorways or country roads.
