Stage Tuning for Beginners

The concept of the "Stage" is one of the more perplexing terms you may encounter when first becoming interested in car tuning. Whereas the basic concept of stage tuning is simple, how well these terms are used is not, so today we'll take a closer look over how this tends to work.

What is Stage Tuning?

A stage is a collection of updates that work together to form a complete set. A stage, as you might assume, represents how far you've progressed with tuning a component of your vehicle. Stage 2 cars are more tuned than stage 1 cars. Where things can become perplexing is that what each "stage" means varies from vehicle to vehicle, and even from the tuner to tuner.

What one tuner deems stage 3 on a twin turbo Golf may not be the same as stage 3 on a normally aspirated BMW. Worse, what one tuner deems to be stage 3 may be completely different from what another tuner working on the very same car perceives to be stage 3. However, there are some overall guidelines to follow.

Stage One Tuning

 In stage one usually consists of a series of modifications that can be installed on a standard car on its own. This includes remaps that do not require any extra hardware, as well as intake and exhaust upgrades that retain the original catalytic converters. All of these modifications could be made on their own for better power improvements.

When you combine them, the remap software will provide you with greater benefits than it would on its own. One thing to keep in mind: it's not as simple as adding up the individual improvements for each piece of software. Engines are complex machines, and how they interact with one another is not always easy to predict.

Stage Two Tuning

At this point, Stage two can vary depending on the car's weak points from the factory, but the common theme is removing limiting bits of the exhaust in conjunction with the operating system that takes full advantage of this.

Stage Three Tuning

At this point, stage tuning can become a little perplexing. As you try and force the engine beyond its initial design limits, different components that were gladly doing their jobs at lower power levels will need to be replaced with better-performing components. The specific components vary from vehicle to vehicle.
