Problems
Euro 6 Scania trucks — R-Series, S-Series, G-Series, P-Series, XT, and the Scania Super — use an advanced SCR system controlled by the EMS (Engine Management System). These systems are generally reliable but contain numerous sensors, actuators, and electronic control elements that can develop faults. Scania EMS codes should be interpreted with live readings and fault context, rather than as a direct instruction to replace a part.
Scania diagnostic wording can differ between EMS/EEC generations and vehicle software. SDP3 is used to confirm the active code, its status and the truck-specific test plan.

What it means
The EMS is not seeing the pressure condition it expects from the reductant supply system. The code alone cannot distinguish a pump fault from a restriction, leak or sensor-reading issue.

NOx Sensor Faults on Scania Euro 6
Scania Euro 6 trucks carry upstream and downstream NOx sensors that the EMS monitors continuously. EMS 4116 and EMS 4117 relate to the upstream sensor signal being out of range (too high or too low respectively); EMS 4124 relates to the downstream sensor reporting an unexpected signal — most often because the SCR catalyst is not achieving sufficient NOx conversion.
NOx sensors on Scania trucks fail for similar reasons to other makes: soot contamination of the sensing element, corrosion at the connector pins, and thermal fatigue from repeated heat cycling. However, on Scania trucks a significant number of EMS 4116/4117 faults are traced to wiring and connector problems rather than the sensor itself — particularly on older R-Series trucks where the sensor loom is exposed to road debris. Scania SDP3 provides live data from both NOx sensors simultaneously, enabling direct comparison and confident diagnosis.
AdBlue Pump & Pressure Faults
EMS 5127 (AdBlue Pressure Too Low) and EMS 5128 (Pressure Too High) indicate the pump module is not maintaining correct system pressure. Low pressure on Scania trucks most commonly results from pump wear, internal leaks within the pump module, or a blocked filter. High pressure — less common — usually points to a blocked return line or a dosing injector that is stuck closed, backing pressure up into the system.
The Scania AdBlue pump module is a sealed unit containing the pump, pressure sensor, filter, and heater elements. Scania SDP3 allows actuator testing of the pump — commanding it to run and logging actual pressure against the EMS's expected value — which separates pump failure from pressure sensor failure before any parts are ordered.
Dosing Injector Faults (EMS 5130)
EMS 5130 covers the dosing system more broadly, but the dosing injector is the most common physical component it implicates. The Scania dosing injector atomises AdBlue into the exhaust stream. When the injector tip fails to retract fully at shutdown, the purge cycle cannot complete, leaving fluid to evaporate and crystallise on the nozzle. Over time this restricts or completely blocks dosing flow.
Scania SDP3 provides a dosing injector actuator test that commands dosing and verifies the response. We also check the injector heater circuit — the heater maintains fluid temperature at cold start, and a heater circuit fault can cause the injector to fail to open correctly in low ambient temperatures.
Crystallisation
Crystallisation of urea (white solid deposits from evaporated AdBlue) is a known issue across Scania SCR systems, particularly on trucks used in urban distribution work with frequent short trips. In these duty cycles, exhaust temperatures rarely reach the sustained levels needed for a complete purge cycle at shutdown, and AdBlue residue dries around the injector nozzle and return line connections.
On Scania trucks, crystallisation is particularly associated with EMS 5127 (pressure faults) when the return line is restricted, and EMS 5130 when the injector itself is partially blocked. The deposits are not always visible externally — on some Scania installations the injector is partially enclosed by heat shielding, making a thorough inspection necessary rather than a visual check from a distance.
Wiring & Connector Faults
Wiring faults are a significant cause of EMS 4116 and EMS 4117 on Scania trucks — sometimes more common than genuine sensor failure, particularly on higher-mileage R-Series and G-Series trucks. The NOx sensor connector and the wiring from the sensor back to the EMS pass through areas prone to moisture ingress and abrasion damage.
We test the full sensor circuit — connector pin condition, loom continuity, and resistance — using Scania SDP3 and manual testing before any sensor replacement is recommended. We have attended many vehicles where a NOx sensor has already been replaced by another workshop without resolving the fault, because the wiring fault driving the code was never identified.
SCR Catalyst Efficiency — EMS 4124
EMS 4124 is generated when the downstream NOx sensor confirms the SCR catalyst is not converting NOx at the expected efficiency. Scania's EMS compares upstream and downstream readings and calculates the conversion ratio — when this falls below the programmed threshold, EMS 4124 is logged and torque limitation typically follows.
The underlying cause may not be the catalyst itself. An underdosing injector, poor quality AdBlue, low exhaust temperature from a malfunctioning temperature sensor or exhaust leak, or a biased upstream NOx sensor can all produce EMS 4124 without the catalyst being degraded. Scania SDP3 provides the live NOx conversion efficiency ratio alongside all associated sensor data, allowing us to work through these causes systematically before condemning an expensive catalyst.
Engine Torque Reduction on Scania Trucks
Scania's SCR enforcement strategy implements torque limitation (torque reduction) when EMS determines that an SCR fault has exceeded an acceptable threshold. Unlike some other manufacturers that describe this simply as "derate", Scania's EMS actively steps the torque limit down in stages — the driver typically sees this as a progressive loss of power accompanied by the SCR malfunction warning and, in more severe cases, a vehicle speed restriction.
The severity of torque reduction depends on the fault code, how long it has been active, and whether previous fault clearances have occurred without repair. A vehicle that has had codes cleared multiple times without fixing the underlying fault may move into deeper torque reduction more quickly than a first-time fault presentation.
"Starts Remaining" — Restart Countdown
Scania's "Starts Remaining" counter is part of the EMS enforcement mechanism for persistent SCR faults. When a qualifying fault is present, each engine start reduces the counter by one. When it reaches zero, the EMS prevents the engine from starting — a locked-out condition that cannot be resolved by simply clearing fault codes with a generic scanner.
Restoring a Scania from a non-start SCR situation requires Scania SDP3 access to read the current EMS state, proper handling of the active fault that triggered the enforcement, and in most cases a formal EMS reset procedure. Preventing Scania AdBlue Failures
- Use ISO 22241 approved AdBlue only — quality directly affects SCR catalyst performance
- Respond to the first EMS or SCR warning immediately — Scania's enforcement is progressive
- Allow the engine to idle briefly at shutdown to support the purge cycle completing
- Avoid contaminating the AdBlue tank — diesel ingress destroys the catalyst
- Repair exhaust system leaks promptly — they affect temperature sensor and NOx readings
